Walking Together Toward a World Without ALS: Reflecting on the 2026 St. Louis Walk to Defeat ALS

This past weekend, our Assistance Home Care Team was honored to participate in the 2026 Walk to Defeat ALS in Forest Park, joining hundreds of individuals, families, caregivers, advocates, and supporters united by one shared purpose: creating a world without ALS.

Events like the Walk to Defeat ALS are powerful reminders that no one should face this disease alone. They bring together communities to raise awareness, celebrate resilience, honor loved ones, and generate critical funding that helps improve the lives of people living with ALS today while advancing promising research for tomorrow.

Understanding ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement.

Over time, people living with ALS may experience increasing difficulty with walking, speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing. While cognitive function often remains intact, the physical changes brought on by ALS can significantly impact daily life for both the individual and their family.

Although there is currently no cure, advances in research, medical care, assistive technology, and comprehensive support services continue to improve quality of life and offer hope for the future.

The ALS Association’s Lasting Impact

The ALS Association plays a vital role in supporting individuals and families throughout every stage of the ALS journey.

Funds raised through events like the Walk to Defeat ALS help make possible:

  • Local care services and support groups
  • Educational resources for families and caregivers
  • Equipment loan programs and community resources
  • Advocacy efforts that improve access to care
  • Groundbreaking research focused on developing new treatments and ultimately finding a cure

Every dollar raised helps ensure that families affected by ALS have access to compassionate support while fueling scientific discoveries that bring us closer to ending this disease.

Supporting Families Beyond the Walk

At Assistance Home Care, we understand that caring for someone living with ALS requires extraordinary compassion, flexibility, and teamwork.

As the disease progresses, care needs often evolve as well. Many families begin by needing occasional assistance before transitioning to more comprehensive support as mobility and daily activities become increasingly challenging.

Our experienced caregivers can provide personalized in-home care including:

  • Personal care and assistance with activities of daily living
  • Safe mobility and transfer support
  • Meal preparation and hydration assistance
  • Medication reminders
  • Meaningful companionship
  • Overnight care
  • Respite care for family caregivers
  • Around-the-clock 24/7 care when needed

While professional caregiving can never replace the love of family, it can provide invaluable peace of mind, allowing family caregivers the opportunity to rest, recharge, attend appointments, spend time with other loved ones, or simply take a well-deserved break.

Our mission has always been to honor each person’s wish to remain safe, comfortable, and independent at home whenever possible, and we are privileged to walk alongside families navigating an ALS diagnosis.

There’s Still Time to Make a Difference

Although this year’s Walk to Defeat ALS has come to a close, the mission continues.

The 2026 St. Louis Walk to Defeat ALS is still working toward its ambitious fundraising goal of $500,000, and every contribution helps strengthen the programs, services, advocacy, and research that make such a meaningful difference for families affected by ALS.

Whether you participated in the Walk, supported a team, volunteered, or are just learning about the mission today, there is still time to make an impact.

Our Team is proud to stand with the ALS community, the ALS Association, and every family navigating this journey. Together, through awareness, compassion, and continued support, we can help improve lives today while moving ever closer to a future free from ALS.

If you would like to support this year’s Walk to Defeat ALS, we encourage you to consider making a donation to the ALS Association. Every step taken and every dollar given helps bring hope to individuals and families living with ALS.
