2025 APDA Optimism Walk in St. Louis
On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the St. Louis community came together at Logan University for the annual APDA Optimism Walk, and this year was one for the record books! With record-breaking attendance and more walk teams than ever before, the energy, hope, and determination that filled the campus was nothing short of inspiring.
As proud sponsors of the St. Louis APDA Optimism Walk, Assistance Home Care was honored to join in this powerful event that unites families, friends, caregivers, and advocates in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.
Why We Walk
The Optimism Walk is more than an event — it’s a movement. Every step taken represents hope for the future, support for families today, and progress toward new treatments and, one day, a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
Being part of this record-breaking year at Logan University was a reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together. From the inspiring stories shared along the walk route to the joy of families walking side by side, the Optimism Walk truly embodies resilience, courage, and optimism.
How APDA Resources Enrich Families
While the Optimism Walk itself is an incredible day of solidarity and hope, what resonated most deeply was hearing how families are enriched by the ongoing programming offered by the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).
Families shared how support groups, exercise classes, and educational programs help them stay active, connected, and resilient. These resources not only empower individuals living with Parkinson’s but also strengthen family bonds — reminding us that no one has to walk this journey alone.

Local Leadership: Amanda Schmidt’s Role in St. Charles Parkinson’s Support Groups
At Assistance Home Care, we’re proud to be more than just sponsors — we’re active participants in supporting families impacted by Parkinson’s. Our very own Amanda Schmidt, who holds a Bachelor’s in Social Work, leads the St. Charles Parkinson’s Support Group for Spouses at the Spencer Library. This group meets the first Tuesday of every month and provides a safe, welcoming, and judgment-free space for spouses to share their experiences, challenges, and victories.
Amanda’s ability to connect with families, foster open conversations, and create meaningful connections is a true reflection of her dedication and compassion. Her volunteer work with the APDA ensures that spouses never feel alone in their caregiving journey.

Parkinson’s Disease & In-Home Care: Meeting Families Where They Are
One of the highlights of the day was connecting with so many individuals and families whose lives are touched by Parkinson’s. Through these conversations, we were able to share how in-home care can be a meaningful support system for those navigating the challenges of caring for someone with Parkinson’s disease.
In-home care can provide:
-
Critical medication reminders to help manage complex treatment schedules.
-
Exercises and activities that promote mobility, strength, and independence.
-
Mobility and safety oversight to reduce the risk of falls and ensure peace of mind.
-
Companionship and encouragement, which are just as vital as physical support.
- Respite for Family Caregivers, allowing spouses and Family Caregivers a break to take care of themselves.
These services, tailored to each family’s unique needs, can make a tremendous difference in maintaining quality of life at home.
