A New Four-Legged Friend at Memory Care Home Solutions and a Meaningful Tool for Dementia Care

At Assistance Home Care, we know that even small comforts can have a big impact for someone living with dementia. During our recent visit to Memory Care Home Solutions in St. Louis, we toured their incredible interactive home — a hands-on space where families can explore adaptive and dementia-friendly tools to make home life safer, more engaging, and more meaningful.

One of the items they already featured was a dementia-friendly cat. While it was a hit with some visitors, their team shared that it mostly appealed to cat lovers. That sparked the idea to add another option for those who prefer pups — a dementia-friendly puppy.

Dementia-Friendly Companion Pets Make a Difference

For someone living with dementia, a lifelike companion pet can be more than a source of comfort … it can spark memories, reduce feelings of loneliness, and offer calming sensory stimulation. These interactive pets wag their tails, make gentle sounds, and respond to touch, providing a therapeutic presence without the demands of caring for a real animal.

For Care Professionals providing in-home care services, dementia-friendly pets can also be a wonderful engagement tool. They can help ease the transition into a visit, encourage conversation, and give Clients a sense of companionship between care tasks. In our experience, they often lead to smiles, laughter, and even heartwarming stories about past pets.

A Gift That Will Keep on Giving

Yesterday, we had the joy of presenting the Memory Care Home Solutions team with their new dementia-friendly puppy. With its soft fur, gentle tail wags, and cheerful barks, it was love at first bark! The Team is excited to showcase it to visiting families as a comforting, therapeutic option for loved ones living with dementia who can no longer safely care for a real dog.

We’re proud to be a promoter and supporter of Memory Care Home Solutions and their mission to empower families navigating dementia care. Just as their interactive home offers a firsthand look at helpful tools and ideas, our own Training Home features mobility devices, adaptive tools, aging-in-place technology, and meaningful activities including our own dementia-friendly pets.

How to Get Your Own

Families who would like to explore dementia-friendly pets can easily find them online. The same dementia-friendly companion puppy gifted to Memory Care Home Solutions is available for purchase on Amazon, making it simple to add this therapeutic tool to your loved one’s care environment. Families can also shop other aging in place items on our Assistance Home Care storefront!
