At Assistance Home Care, our Mission is simple but powerful: Honoring One’s Wishes to Stay at Home. Every day, we walk alongside families navigating the challenges of aging, dementia, or mobility changes. That’s why our Team is committed to taking part in Caregiver Skills Training to best support both our Clients and Care Professionals.
Last week, our Office Team rolled up their sleeves and stepped into the shoes of our Care Professionals with a hands-on training session in our immersive Training Home, located right behind our St. Louis County office at 1409 Salem Hills Drive.
This training was the opposite of passive or hands-off. It was about learning, practicing, and truly understanding the techniques that make safe, dignified care possible for our Clients and creating a shared language with our Care Professionals so we can better support them every day.
A Realistic, Immersive Learning Environment
Our Training Home is one of the most unique and valuable tools we offer to our Team, our Clients, and even our community partners. Designed to feel just like the home of someone aging in place, it’s equipped with:
-
Durable medical equipment such as a hospital bed, gait belts, hoyer lift, and sit-to-stand devices
-
Home safety tools that demonstrate grab bars, ramps, shower chairs, and other fall-prevention equipment
-
Dementia-friendly activities to engage those living with memory loss
-
A realistic kitchen, bedroom, and living space to practice everyday care scenarios
This environment allowed our Office Team to get hands-on with the same equipment our Care Pros use in the field, gaining insight into how small details can make a big difference for both safety and dignity.
Building Skills and Empathy
During the session, our Team learned and practiced key personal care techniques: everything from safe hygiene support to proper body mechanics for assisting someone with mobility challenges.
We focused on transfers using gait belts, hoyer lifts, and sit-to-stand devices, learning how to:
-
Communicate clearly with Clients to keep them calm and comfortable
-
Maintain proper posture and hand placement to avoid injury
-
Work as a team when using equipment for heavier or less mobile Clients
This training reinforced not only how to do these things but why they matter: preventing falls, preserving independence, and protecting both Client and Caregiver from injury.
Why It Matters for Our Clients
For many families, the decision to bring in home care is deeply personal. Knowing that their loved one will be cared for safely and by well trained Care Professionals is often the deciding factor.
When our Team understands firsthand how these techniques work, we can better answer questions, address concerns, and match each Client with a Care Professional who is properly trained and comfortable with their needs. It’s about building confidence from the very first conversation.
Why Training Matters for Our Care Pros
Our Care Professionals are the heart of everything we do. By taking time to practice these skills ourselves, we’re able to:
-
Offer meaningful coaching and troubleshooting when questions arise
-
Provide resources, support, and refresher training tailored to real-world situations
-
Recognize and celebrate the skill and professionalism our Care Pros demonstrate daily
When our Care Pros feel supported, they can show up with confidence, and that leads to better care, better outcomes, and stronger relationships with the families we serve.
Training For Professional & Family Caregivers
Our Training Home isn’t just for our internal Team. We regularly welcome Care Pros, Clients, and community partners to explore the space, learn about home safety solutions, and experience tools that can make caregiving easier.
Whether you are a family caregiver looking to learn safe transfer techniques or a professional seeking continuing education, this space is here for you. It’s one more way Assistance Home Care invests in education and empowerment.
Honoring Our Commitment
Our recent training session was more than just a workshop, it was a reminder of our responsibility to the people we serve. We are committed to continuous learning and to equipping every member of our Team with the skills, empathy, and confidence they need to make aging in place safe and fulfilling.
